The Donation Process

You’ve discovered that birth tissue can help others heal by browsing this site. Now you can choose to make a difference. Registering through the Birth Tissue Donor Registry (BTR) is your first step. It’s free, takes just a few minutes, and lets you explore donation at your own pace. 

Once you’re between 28 weeks and full term, you’ll receive a pre-filled consent form in your BTR account. You can review it in advance, sign it electronically, and bring a printed copy to your next healthcare provider visit. This ensures your care team is informed and ready when the time comes. 

After you’ve consented, BTR helps coordinate next steps with your provider or birth center. If your delivery site doesn't have a donation program in place, BTR may connect with a licensed Tissue Recovery Program to explore recovery support at your location. 

Before donation, the FDA requires a brief medical and behavioral health questionnaire to help protect tissue recipients. You’ll complete the Donor Risk Assessment Interview (DRAI) securely through your BTR account — either ahead of time or with help from a trained interviewer. 

With everything in place, your focus stays where it belongs — on you and your baby. In some cases, a simple supply kit may be sent to you if your birth location doesn't store donation materials. On your special day, your gift is ready to go and your legacy begins.
