PROVIDERS

WHY YOU SHOULD PARTNER WITH US

Hospitals and birth centers have a unique opportunity to transform standard deliveries into moments of healing and innovation. By partnering with the Birth Tissue Donor Registry (BTR), your facility can support the donation of valuable birth tissues—such as the placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic membrane—for use in evidence-based medical treatments ranging from chronic wound healing to ophthalmologic repair.

Beyond clinical impact, hospitals benefit from aligning with an ethical, evidence-based donation program that upholds the highest standards of compliance and patient care. We provide full support, training, and turnkey processes that integrate smoothly into existing workflows—ensuring minimal disruption to staff while maximizing contribution to community health. Participation enhances the hospital’s reputation as a forward-thinking institution committed to innovation, compassion, and meaningful partnerships.

A Smarter, More Sustainable Approach

Most placentas are incinerated as biowaste—costing hospitals money and wasting their therapeutic potential. According to national data, U.S. obstetric hospitals average 10,619 births annually. With a conservative 30% eligibility rate, that’s an estimated 3,186 placentas per year that could be ethically donated rather than discarded (PMC8501399).

Given that a placenta weighs approximately 1.4 lbs (IOSR Study), and the average cost of biowaste disposal can reach $20 per pound, facilities could save up to $90,000 per year by implementing a birth tissue donation program.

Donation is not only healing for patients—it’s financially and environmentally smarter for hospitals.

A Bridge Between Donors, Providers, and Purpose

BTR empowers providers to offer birth tissue donation ethically, efficiently, and equitably—no matter the size or structure of your facility.

With access to ready-to-donate patients, vetted recovery partners, and compliance-ready education, your team can elevate care while reducing barriers to access.

BTR does not perform tissue recovery services directly. Instead, we serve as a connector—linking hospitals with FDA-registered, AATB-compliant recovery partners that fit your operational model. We’ll help match you with:

  • Turnkey white-glove partners that handle every aspect of donation logistics

  • Hybrid integration models that collaborate with in-house teams seamlessly integrated into your workflows.

Whether you’re looking for minimal lift or maximum collaboration, BTR ensures the support structure is aligned with your workflows and values.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE DONATION PROCESS

Initial Registration

Eligibility Screening

The donation process begins with the donor registering on our platform. During registration, basic personal information, health history, and medical eligibility are collected. We also provide educational materials to ensure the donor understands the process and can make an informed decision.

Eligibility Screening

Eligibility Screening

After registration, we conduct a screening to confirm the donor meets medical and legal requirements. This may include additional health assessments or screenings. Once eligibility is confirmed, the donor signs an informed consent form, agreeing to the donation and acknowledging their understanding of the types of tissue donated, potential uses, and associated risks.

Collection and Processing

Trained medical professionals collect the designated birth tissue at the time of delivery. The tissue is then transported to a processing facility where it is preserved in optimal conditions to maintain its quality for future use.

Storage and Distribution

Utilization in Research and Treatment

Once processed, the tissue is stored under cryogenic conditions (frozen) to preserve its viability. As a provider, we ensure the tissue is stored or distributed according to regulatory standards. The tissue may be used in medical research, stem cell therapies, or regenerative medicine.

Utilization in Research and Treatment

Donated placental tissue is a valuable resource used for transplants, scientific research, the development of new therapies, and medical education. Researchers study this tissue to explore human biology, including stem cell behavior, tissue repair, and disease processes. The main objective is to use placental-derived materials in regenerative medicine, wound healing, and various clinical treatments.

Ongoing Support and Follow-up

Our commitment continues after the donation. Donors are also updated on how their tissue is being used, while ensuring their privacy and rights are respected. We are always available to address any questions or concerns throughout the process. Some programs may additionally offer resources for donors who wish to stay informed about discoveries in medical science or participate in future donation opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Partnering with a birth tissue donation program allows your hospital to contribute to life-changing medical research and treatments, including regenerative medicine, wound care, and surgical procedures. It also enhances your hospital’s commitment to community health and innovation without altering standard clinical care.

All donation procedures follow strict guidelines set by the FDA, AATB (American Association of Tissue Banks), and HIPAA regulations. Our program ensures full compliance by providing education, consent protocols, and documentation support, maintaining the highest standards of safety and ethics.

Their health and medical history of the  perspective donor will be reviewed. Some requirements are that the donor has no major complications during pregnancy or delivery (vaginal or C-section). Must test negative for HIV, hepatitis B/C, syphilis, CMV, and similar conditions.  Scheduled cesarean deliveries allow for safe and timely tissue collection. Donors receive full info and must give written consent before donating. Conditions like substance use, certain infections, or risky medical histories may disqualify donation.
